BILENE
Bilene is situated about 180 kilometres to the northeast of Mozambique’s capital, Maputo. Before independence the village was known as San Martinho. This small town is situated along the edge of the 27 kilometre long, and eight kilometre wide Uembje Lagoon.
Bilene serves as a good stop over point for those travelling to and from the northern destinations. The Uembje lagoon is an ideal family spot with its pristine stretches of white sandy beaches and shallow calm water which allows for safe swimming.
Bilene is a popular water sports destination, and visitors can enjoy various activities including jet skiing, waterskiing, parasailing, paddle ski’ing, canoeing and windsurfing, most of which equipment is available for hire at the numerous resorts.
At Bilene one can also experience fishing, sailing, diving both in the lagoon and the open ocean, kayaking, snorkelling as well as whale watching and boat rides on the lagoon.
Large populations of flamingos and various other water birds frequent the area in the summer months searching the shallow fringes of the water for food, adding a true tropical paradise feel to the region.
With a large selection of resorts, restaurants and bars, Bilene is enjoyed by all.
